Wednesday, September, 30th

 dear diary,

today is my last day as a 27 years-old woman (YUP, TOMORROW is my birthday !!!!!) I am so excited to turn 28. I used to be scared to get closer to the thirties but not anymore, as I am viewing the 30s as the prime of life ! If you read my post Turning 28 in less than 2 weeks, then you know I keep a diary as countdown for my birthday, writing every week and then every day the week previous my birthday about plans, thoughts and hopes for this special day. Well, I am done now. I wrote my last entry this morning, it's called Tomorrow. Here are some sentences I wrote

"Tomorrow’s my birthday :) I am not realizing yet that tomorrow’s my birthday, I am going to turn 28 !!! omg I am so old lol. Closer to the thirtieees. I have so much to do omg !! I need to clean the house, do some grocery shopping, and i will get my hair done for tomorrow later today. I am happy, my mom and baby sis sent me a message this morning, and It made my day waking up to this. I couldn’t wake up for fajr, I don’t know how I just closed my eyes and all of a sudden 2 hours went by. I need to sleep earlier. I don’t even have a schedule for tomorrow. I have my eyebrows appointnement, and then I have to pick up my cake. "

I am so grateful for the life I am living. I was so not destined (statistically speaking) to live the life I have, but with God's infinite mercy, I am free, safe, comfortable, challenged enough to grow, healthy, and loved.

Can't wait to share with you guys 8 lessons I learned throughout my twenties that shaped me into the amazing person I am today.

saturday, September 26th

 dear diary,

I finally renewed my city's bike subscription. The last time I rode one was 8 months ago (a shame, coming from a regular rider no less) but I had to redo some paperwork for my subscription which I kept putting off. I am so glad I did it now, and rode for about 30 minutes, even though I am all sweaty (I am writing from a coffee shop next to the bike station where I dropped my bike off) I figured I deserved a treat after such a physical effort (treat = homemade orange juice, as I am on a sugarfree diet, kill me) and decided to write a little about this nice experience that I acutally missed so much.

I went to this huge park because  I wanted to walk a little and enjoy some nature, especially as autumn colors are slowly settling. I ended up talking to my dad for an hour on the phone as I walked, and then decided to ride one of the city's bikes. I put my earphones, and my Arctic Monkey's playlist (I am a huge fan) and especially this song :

I feel like it's such a romanticize-your-life kinda song, it's somehow slow and sentimental in my opinion. If you don't know it, defintely check it out. As I was riding the bike through the city and the park, I felt like the main character and a huge wave of nostalgia took over me, as if I was reviving some old memory and yearning for something that I couldn't exactly pinpoint.

I am also going back to vlogging, and I will soon post my first video (after a year of no posting). I am so happy to be back to my hobbies, and the things that fulfill me.

Wednesday, 23rd September

 dear diary,

blogging has become my favortie thing lately. I juste keep adding widgets and tabs and I have so many topics I want to write about, whether it’s essays or share my own experiences and thoughts. I know it’s just a recent hobby (out of the 100 hobbies I already have as I am a multifaced/multipassionnate person with lots of interests and very curious), but I can’t help it. I feel like it stimulates my creativity in a different way than my other interests. I am just enjoying so much, and so proud of my little corner here on internet. I don’t even care if people don’t read it, I just love being a blog girlie.

I have to admit; it’s hard to have a sea of interests. It means you have to be hierarchical and organized about them. My method is to pick a top 10 that I rotate around the week, and the others, spread them across the month. For example, journalling/reading/blogging/vlogging/taekwondo/writting/night classes/makeup looks are my daily/weekly hobbies. Whilst painting/movies/museums/book clubs/walks/theater are more of a montly thingy. I pick one date in the month and schedule them. Among all of this, I throw in some quality time with my friends and family. I do have some occasional hobbies too, like horse riding, riding bikes, culture classes and swimming. And finally, I am also intersted in politics and I consider myself an activist (irl, not online lol). That’s how I make sure I am fulfilled to the most and live life to the fullest. Life is short, I didn’t grew up privileged so I feel like I owe it to my younger self to experience everything I can.

Monday, september 21st

dear diary,

It's officially AUTUMN (aka my favorite season). Key word is officially, as the weather is not following along yet. It's cold in the morning and hot in the afternoon, and overall, just sunny. To me, autumn officially starts on October. September is the transitional month in my opinion. The real deal, the colors, gloomy and rainy weather, they take place in october.
It's 1:40am as I am typing this and I can't sleep. I took a nap earlier in the afternoon (my mistake) followed by a very needed gym session and now I just can't get myself to sleep. I have been super sick the past few days, and I passed out this afternoon after work. I feel a lot better, I really think moving my body and sweating actually helped me recover faster. It was getting boring being a couch potato girl ! But hey, at least I got to (finally) start watching Pretty Little Liars as an adult (I HAD to leave Gilmore Girls alone, after watching it 5 times in the past 3 years, twice this year). I love PLL, especially the late 2000s outfits and hair style (them side bangs and ringlets omg) the drama, the friendships and the fall vibe it carries. I love how their group is made of different personalities yet there is room for everyone. I am hooked !!
sweet dreams.

turning 28 in less than 2 weeks

Yes, I am living my last days as a 27 years old woman. Only two years left before the big 30 !!! (I am a late 90s doll, October 1998).

I am so sick today. We are in some kind of in-between seasons, no heat anymore but not cold yet either. As the weather keeps going up and down, well, so does my fever. My head hurts, and as I was scrolling through my phone whilst hidden under my blanket, I realized my birthday is indeed, coming up soon. So I decided why not make a hot cup of ginger tea, put my office siren glasses on, and write something about it ?

And if you know me, you know I take my birthday very seriously. It's a big deal to me. It has to be a special day, hell, a special week. If it falls on a weekday, I automatically take the day off (I refuse to work on my birthday). If not, then I make it a whole weekend thingy. In any case, I try to make it special.

Like most people, I have my traditions around my birthday. Every year, since I was 20, I write every week preceeding my birthday, about how I feel, what am I grateful for so far, and mostly, what are my plans for said d-day. It's so intertesting to me to see how all the things mentionned above evolve as my birthday gets closer. What I love the most about these, is that I write them in the same folder on my computer, so every year, I get the chance to re-read for the 100th time what my life and mindset was about the previous one, to see how much I grew over the years, as well as my view on my birthday. I also always have this tradition of getting myself a small cake and blow a candle, as well as writting a card to wish myself a happy birthday.

And looking back, evey year was different : in 2020, I invited my friends to a chinese restaurant (one of my favorites back in my small town), we all gathered around the same table and had fun and laughed. The specialty of this restaurant, is that you can get on stage and sing in front of all the customers ! Back then I was a huge K-pop fan, so I asked the waitress whether she could put some BTS on, and I went on stage and danced (I know...) in front of everybody. With my whole chest. Not an ounce of shame whatsoever. (I still can't believe I did this, almost-28-year-old me denies any ties with who I was back then)

In 2023, my birthday was on a sunday, so I made it a weekend thingy. I went to a museum, to a nice restaurant with my friends then went for a karaoke session on saturday, and then on sunday, there was a fancy horse racing event and I spent my whole day there at the racecourse. It was one of my best birthdays ever, I had so much through the entire weekend, full of nice experiences and new people.

In 2024, I celebrated it alone. I got myself a nice cake, wore nice clothes and went to La Girafe, a fancy restaurant next to La Tour Eiffel, and had a nice celebration by myself. It was a nice change. Here is what I wrote on my birthday diary back then :

"Tomorrow’s my birthday. I can’t wait, Today’s my last day as a 25 yo. I am leaving a lot behind, a past version and past memories. There is a lot I am leaving behind. I can say I am quite scared to be honest, I don’t know what God has in store for me. I am excited, there is a lot I can do, and a lot I want to do. I won’t lie I am scared and excited at the same to time to grow even more as a person. I feel like I reached a threshold and I need to step up as a person."

And boy, I had no idea what was coming up. I couldn't have imagined how 2025 would turn. It was one of the hardest years of my entire life yet the most successful one, and as God is the Most Merciful, 2026 has been the best.

You may ask, well, what about this year ? Well this year the tradition keeps going, I decided to celebrate my birthday at home for a change. I am trying to do things differently, and I accomplished so much this year that I felt like enjoying that moment with people I appreciate and that are meaningful to me.

Turning 28th means a big deal to me this year. I think it's because how much my life changed since last year, therefor I feel the need to turn it into something memorable.

As I am approaching the thirties, I am realizing his is the best my life has been so far, whilst still keeping in mind that the best is yet to come. I am really excited to see what this year has in store for me, can't wait to witness what kind of person I am going to grow into, and what kind of stories I will be able to write about in the upcoming years.

So stay tuned for next time, because I am going to share 8 important lessons that I learned that shaped who I am as I am turning 28.

nostalgia hurts me so bad

Watching Legally blonde for the hundredth time to need a girly pop boost, listening to Side to Side on my CD lector, doing my cut crease make up with the Anastasia Bervely Hills Subculture Palette (because well, 2026 is the new 2016) and wearing my wired headphones makes me yearn for an era that feels so far away yet so close at the same time. And social media doesn't help :  every other scroll is a trashy y2k makeup tutorial, a "10 items that disappeared in the last decade" list, Britney Spears iconic performances, MTV's Christina Aguilera and Eminem ongoing beef, Zendaya's old instagram #swag pictures, and how makeup was funner when it needed an extra 10 steps so your blended soft brown wouldn't sag on your deep blue cut crease color (they really said for you page).

I found myself feeling deeply nostalgic of that time. I was born in October 1998, meaning I was barely a todler around the 2000s,  a teenager around the 2010s, and by 2016 I was a senior highschooler and was ready for college by autumn of that year. Does that make me someone who lived through all those interesting decades and fun years ? I don't know. I do remember Britney Spears' Toxic on MTV playing on my small living room TV in 2004, riding my bike around our small village and listening to 2009's Jena Lee J'aimerais tellement on my mp3 lector (I used to steal the house phone's battery to put it in the mp3 lector). I felt deeply exposed using that device back then when smart phones started to become a thing (who remembers Samsung's Player One ? Only the popular kids used to have that phone before the Blackberry took over) but hey, at least I was blasting Where have you been on my cheap earphones and hurting my ears on my way to school. I find it interesting writing down all these stages of my life here on internet, because the way I live life today makes me feel like all of this was merely an imagination (contrasting with the overbearing digital life I lead nowdays). Deeper down the memory lane, I remember once back in middle school (around 2012 I think) my two last periods were cancelled, with one of my childhood friends (We are still friends to this day, shout out to youuuu!!) we raided the cheap candy store next to our school and then, went to our friend's house to play Just Dance, before it was time to go back in front of the school to act like we were just finishing class. Small and casual moments like those that turn into core memories just make me feel grateful of living a meaningful childhood, where my attention wasn't caged in some digital item and got to create moments that weren't meant for performance.

And if you are chronically online like me, you may have seen the articles and videos explaining to you how 2026 is the new 2016. According to BBC, TikTok searches for "2016" surged by 452% in the first week of 2026. All the now clean girls showing their past heavy makeups, mannequin challenge recreation everywhere, and cringy instagram swag and careless posts with that golden rose #filter. At that time, I just graduated highschool, was about to turn 18 and start my first year in college, majoring in mathematics and physics. I remember when I got my first scholarship at 18 and spent it on matte liquid lipsticks from a brand that doesn't even exist anymore, Morphe's 35 Palettes and Benefit's hoola Bronzer (because yeah, it was BRONZER year back then). I was a huge fan of american YouTube beauty influencers, follwing religiously every step of their makeup tutorial and spend my scholarship money on expensive Huda Beauty liquid lipsticks, Fenty foundations and Urban Decay Naked palettes. If you knew me back then, you may remember me showing up to my advanced statistics lecture with a heavy brown cut crease makeup and deep purple matte lipstick. I was that girl !

I think that's why a big part of me is still attached to that time. They were some of the best years of my life, as College years are supposed to be. Every experience was amplified, I had more freedom as I was becoming an adult, peak music culture and mixtapes, first relationships, driving license, exams, projects and the birth of my baby sister in 2018. A lot of first times for me, and by extension, lots of first times for the late 90's folks (Older gen Z), who may have been seeing this 2026 as a way of reflecting on themselves, and how they spent the last decade. Most of us then highschoolers graduated college, started our first jobs, switched companies and cities, traveled, moved around and lived all these years in a way that shaped who we are today.

2026 also marks a decade since 2016, the fastest paced decade ever, with lots of major events that shaped the world in what it is today, but mostly, what fragilized it and made it uncertain. From global pandemics, heinous and unsafe far right climate rising around the world, next door wars and 4K documented genocides, economic gaps and fragility, the future feels unpredictible and young people are, rightfully, tense and apprehensive. When the present feels unstable and the future difficult to imagine, the past can begin to feel unusually comforting. Nostalgia offers something that the present often cannot: familiarity. It creates the illusion of a time when things were simpler, more predictable, or at least easier to understand. This does not necessarily mean longing for the distant past. It can mean returning to the 2000s, the early 2010s, childhood television shows, old video games, disposable cameras, childhood snacks, Tumblr aesthetics, early YouTube, or the music and fashion associated with a period that, in retrospect, feels remarkably uncomplicated.

It's only understandable that we seek comfort and emotional stability in our memories, where things may have felt easier, less aggravating and gave us a deeper sense of belonging and community, two of the most important yet lacking emotional needs that young people are experiencing more and more. Many of us are tired of digital noise, constant anixety related to everyday's bad news, feeling privileged enough not to experience them but not less concerned about their impact. Lots of us folks who grew up to be the digital adults that we are today, yearn for a period were content wasn't overbearingly noisy and a barrier to collective and present shared experiences.

In that sense, nostalgia may be less about wanting to go backwards than about wanting to recover a feeling: safety, familiarity, community, optimism, or simply the sense that the future was something to look forward to. Ultimately, by definition, nostalgia is a bittersweet feeling of old happiness and slight sadness, and maybe that's why it hurts (me) so bad.
